The Hunt is a science fiction short story of 7,000 words.

An expedition to another world. A group of alien hunters. Malcolm thinks he is prepared, but the hunt will be more savage than he expected.

The Hunt eBook J H Dierking

This quick little story hits on a lot of things that can make science fiction great--imaginative alien worlds, conjectured advancements of science and technology, and a solid human grounding that makes a fantastical futuristic story relevant and meaningful to a modern-day reader.

Ably written and convincingly described, The Hunt tells the story of one human's observation of an alien ritual that takes a sour turn. By the conclusion, the reader is presented with a few parallels to 21st century Earth. My only complaint is that I'm not sure what the intended message is--is this a cry for compassion or an endorsement of foisting one's cultural values on other societies? Unless it's supposed to be both, making it complex and morally murky...which would make me like the story even more.

Regardless, this is a solid scifi piece with a great ending that leaves you with a little bit to think about.

The Hunt eBook J H Dierking Reviews

Good quick read. A little slow at the start but then it all comes together at the end.

Note to the author why would you leave this on a cliffhanger-ish end? I want more darn it!
Really interesting and well written.
I enjoyed this quick but compelling read. Interesting alien creatures, technology, moral questions relating to our modern times, and a well-crafted ending. Worth a look.
Interesting story. If there's been more, I'd have read more. A little predictable, but it still worked for the purpose.
I was unsure what this story was about. Thought it might have been like the movie predator. Instead Of A Mindless Horror Hunt It Ended Up Having Some Heart to It. Enjoyed the quick read. Details of the aliens gave me a nice visual. The end was a bit predictable but worked as a quick ending.
Nicely done short that is descriptive in it's rendering of the aliens, their planet, flora and fauna. I detect a morality lesson of imperialism and the disastrous consequences of imposing one's cultural beliefs on other species/races. I was instantly transported to an alien world and thrown into a vicious hunt of giant alien creatures and that makes this well worth the read in my book. Recommended.
J.H. Dierking’s short story The Hunt has us accompany a human named Malcolm on his way to observe a hunt conducted by an alien species. This is a short story, so I can’t really tell you any more about the content without spoiling the story. I will say that at first the aliens seem rather stereotyped (they call Malcolm simply ‘human’ and make constant fun of his small size in comparison to them). The initial description of the planet is also a bit stilted, mixed oddly with the alien’s chatter.

As the story progresses, however, it pulls together nicely and kept my attention. Malcolm turns out to have some personality, as does one of the aliens. As short stories go, I found this one to be worth reading.
