"Another" great read by Ron Base. This is a continuation of the saga of the Florida newspaper guy turned detective, but you will enjoy this installment whether you've read the first or not - I'm on to book three in the series. In this story, Detective Tree continues to be battered by the job, loved by his wife, Freddie, annoyed by the police that hinder rather than help, and confused by the actions/situations of his son. The main character was a Hemingway fan and much of the story included references to the authors works. Dark with a happier ending than most of Hemingways stories. Happier depending whether you were dead or alive.
The author takes you down into the heat and humidity of Florida and into the fetid backwaters along the southwest coast swilling with all sorts of criminals. The protagonist deals with a web of people who each have reasons to foil his attempts to solve the mystery of "who done it." A good read that holds together right to the end. Or is it the end?
A good solid mystery that has more than a few very unique situations. The road to solving this mystery takes you to Key West and back. And it's a bit hair-raising at times. It all comes together in the end with a few surprises. That's what makes a good mystery.
Started off unbelievable. After three international spooks all wanted to hire the hero to find the damsel in distress, I was ready to hang it up.
But, I stayed with it, and I came to like the hero a bit more.
The end was exciting, and did a good job of tying up all the loose ends.
This was a light easy read. I did find there were places where the book dragged a little. All in all it was a nice book to read when you have a few minutes at a time. A mystery with a few surprises included. If you are looking for a book that you don't want to get too involved (not wanting to put it down) this is the one. An enjoyable pleasant read. I would read another book by this author.
Interesting local info in the mystery.. although the resolution was really a bit disappointing. Seems like the Sanibel Sunset Detective really might look for a different line of work - he pretty much stumbled through the story - and things happened to him, but not of his own making. The number of dead bodies that popped up around him was pretty amazing.
This is the third novel I have read,by Ron,about the Sanibel Sunset Detective and I must say I do not get tired reading about Tree and his friends, family and, or course, his enemies of which he has many. In fact I found this latest effort had more twists to it than Chubby Checker. It seemed page after page would put Tree in another jam and somehow he always managed to slip out of them, even though there were times I didn't think he would. Trouble seemed to follow him and nothing seemed easy. Ron's writing is easy to read and he makes good use of his cast of characters. With all of Tree's problems and close calls, the ending left me wondering what will happen to him in the next novel Ron has up his sleeve. I thoroughly enjoyed it (as I did the first two) and look forward to more of the exciting life of Tree Callister.
